February 2008

Thing One and I skied at Gore Mountain yesterday and she skied her first double-black diamond trails, Lies and The Rumor.

They were blowing snow top-to-bottom on Lies, so it had a lot of nice soft snow. We did Lies twice in the morning. We went back after lunch and the snow guns were turned off. By that time, the snow was getting bumped up, with a lot of ice and crust between the bumps. It was not quite as much fun as the morning!

The Rumor

We also hit The Rumor in the morning. The Rumor was not as much fun as Lies. The sign warns that falls will result in uncontrollable slides. Yup. No injuries though.

It was a really fun day. Even though it was Presidents’ Week, it was not too crowded. Plus, we stayed on the upper-half of the mountain, so I think that helped keep the crowds away from us.

It snowed all day long, but accumulated only 3-5 inches. Here’s a picture taken from the top of the Cloud trail.

And from just about the same spot in 2005.

Big Brother T sent me a link to a recording, “The Star Spangled Banner…as you’ve never heard it”. It’s a moving story, but after doing a Google search and poking around a bit, it does not appear to be wholly accurate. Brother T, the former American History teacher, seems to be slipping a bit in his retirement!

I did come across two other moving, patriotic messages from famous Americans, Red Skelton and Isaac Asimov. (more…)

Today is a dual occasion for fresh-baked goodies: Valentine’s Day and a day-long party at work. So yesterday evening I made a snickerdoodle cake and a New York-style cheesecake. Both recipes are from one on Bike, Bake, and Beyond’s favorite books, The Cake Mix Doctor. I took half in to work and the other half stays at home; happy people all around.

Today for dinner I made a Ricotta Stuffed Chicken dish that was a big hit with the whole family. Try it! Let me know what you think of it.

Yesterday, I baked two old standbys, one which is new to the recipe page: Sour Cream Coffee Cake and Banana Bread, a new entry.

Last weekend it was a batch and a half of Ma’s Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies and another new entry, Chocolate Chip Streusel Coffee Cake.

Later this week it’s Valentine’s Day. What should I bake?
