1 cup milk
2 yeast cakes
1 tablespoon vanilla
1/4 pound butter or margarine
3 eggs
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
4 2/3 cup flour
1/3 cup golden raisins

1 egg (to brush over the dough)


  1. Heat milk until it is scalded.
  2. When milk has cooled to lukewarm, dissolve yeast in the milk.
  3. Add vanilla, butter/margarine, eggs, sugar, and salt. Using a spatula or wooden spoon, fold ingredients until well blended.
  4. Sift flour.
  5. Add flour slowly and beat after each addition until thoroughly mixed.
  6. Add raisins.
  7. Let rise until dough doubles in size.
  8. After dough doubles, grease two loaf pans.
  9. Put dough in pans and let rise until double in size again.
  10. After dough rises the second time, heat oven to 350°F.
  11. Brush the top of the dough with an egg and water wash.
  12. Bake for 25-30 minutes.

Makes 2 loaves
